Descendant

Definition

The Descendant is the degree of the zodiac setting over the western horizon at the exact moment of a birth, directly opposite the Ascendant. It marks the cusp of the seventh house and is one of the four classical angles of a natal chart. Traditional astrology associates it with encounter, with the other, and with the significant bonds that appear across a life.

In context

An Ascendant in Aries places the Descendant in Libra: the way a person appears in the world carries the signature of Mars, yet they seek in the other the relational Venusian quality of the opposite sign. The Descendant is not merely the spouse or partner; it describes the kind of presence that attracts as complement or as mirror, what a person recognizes outside and often takes longer to recognize inside themselves.

To go deeper

The Descendant belongs to the horizontal axis of the chart:

  • Ascendant: the opposite angle, first contact.
  • Seventh house: the house whose cusp the Descendant marks.
  • Axis 1/7: the self-other axis structuring bonds.
