Element

Definition

An element, in astrology, is one of the four basic qualities that classify the twelve zodiac signs: fire, earth, air, and water. Each element gathers three signs that share a kind of intelligence or fundamental register: a way of processing experience and inhabiting the world. Elements form, together with modalities, the twofold traditional classification of the signs.

In context

Fire gathers Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius; earth holds Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn; air holds Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius; water holds Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. A chart concentrating many planets in signs of one element carries that register as its dominant way of inhabiting experience: a predominantly fire chart prioritizes action and enthusiasm, while a water chart moves from emotion and bond. The elemental distribution is one of the first structural readings any astrologer makes of a whole map.

To go deeper

Element enters into dialogue with other zodiac categories:

  • Mode: the complementary axis of modalities.
  • Polarity: active (fire, air) versus receptive (earth, water).
  • Triplicity: classical name for three signs of one element.
