Personal and transpersonal
Definition
Personal and transpersonal is the modern grouping that separates the inner planets from the outer ones. The personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) move quickly enough that their positions feel individual to each chart. The transpersonal planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) move so slowly that whole birth cohorts share the same sign placements, so they describe collective tides rather than individual nuance.
In context
If you and a friend were born a few months apart, your personal planets probably sit in different signs and tell two different stories. But your Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are likely in the same signs, because those planets only change sign every several years. The transpersonal layer is the cultural background of a chart; the personal layer is the foreground figure that walks against it.
To go deeper
The personal-transpersonal split has finer subgroups:
- Personal planets: Sun through Mars.
- Social planets: Jupiter and Saturn.
- Generational planets: Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.
