14:14, mirror hour
Two in the afternoon in twenty-four-hour time is 14:14: fourteen doubled in the middle of the afternoon. A double mirror hour when the workday is moving at pace and the end of the shift is still a long way off on the horizon.
The meaning of number 1
The 1 is a single upright stroke, the one line that leans on nothing else. When your birth date folds down to this number, what remains is the stance of the one who goes first. You feel it in the body before the mind agrees: the foot already moving while everyone else is still weighing whether to move at all. The 1 is the pointing finger, the first day of the count, the person on their feet while the rest stay seated. It doesn't ask permission, because it never learned how. It opens the door and finds out afterward what was behind it.
