Imum Coeli

Definition

The Imum Coeli, also called IC or "bottom of the sky", is the lowest degree of the zodiac beneath the horizon at the exact moment of a birth, directly opposite the Midheaven. It marks the cusp of the fourth house and completes, together with the other three classical angles, the vertical axis of the natal chart. It is symbolically tied to origin, root, and inner home.

In context

A Midheaven in Capricorn places the Imum Coeli in Cancer: vocation carries a structural signature, yet inner origin rests on memory, care, and lineage. The IC describes where a person symbolically comes from, what familial and emotional root sustains them, what inner home they inhabit when no one is watching. It is a more private angle, less visible to others, yet structural for reading the whole map.

To go deeper

The Imum Coeli closes the system of four classical angles:

  • Midheaven: the upper angle, vocation.
  • Fourth house: the house whose cusp the IC marks.
  • Axis 4/10: the root-vocation axis.
