Midheaven
Definition
The Midheaven, also called Medium Coeli or MC, is the highest degree of the zodiac above the horizon at the exact moment of a birth. It marks the cusp of the tenth house and forms, together with the Ascendant, the Descendant, and the Imum Coeli, the system of the four classical angles of a natal chart. It defines the vertical axis of the map.
In context
A Midheaven in Capricorn signals that the public and vocational dimension of the chart carries the signature of Saturn: vocation is thought through structure, craft, and long-term construction. The MC describes where a person points socially, what public image they develop, how their professional achievements look from outside. Calculating it requires the exact birth hour, just as the Ascendant and the other two angles do across the whole map.
To go deeper
The Midheaven enters dialogue with the other classical angles:
- Ascendant: eastern angle of first contact.
- Imum Coeli: angle opposite the MC.
- Tenth house: the house whose cusp the MC marks.
