Yin and yang
Definition
Yin and yang is the polarity language modern astrology borrows from the Chinese symbolic register to describe the same two-mode split older Western astrology called masculine and feminine. Yang names the active, outward, expressive mode and applies to fire and air signs. Yin names the receptive, inward, gathering mode and applies to earth and water signs. The vocabulary side-steps the older terms while keeping the same structural distinction.
In context
If your chart leans heavily yang, the way you meet the world is active first: outward action precedes inward reflection. A chart that leans yin processes first and acts later: experience is taken in, sat with, and only then released. The yang signs run on fire and air; the yin signs run on earth and water. Most natal charts mix the two, with one polarity slightly dominant rather than absolute, allowing both modes to show up.
To go deeper
Yin-yang names one of several polarity axes:
- Masculine-feminine: older Western label.
- Element: elemental classification underneath.
- Diurnal-nocturnal: day-night sect polarity.
