Detriment
Definition
Detriment, also called exile, is the negative dignity a planet holds in the sign opposite its domicile. In that position the planet operates off its home ground: the sign lends it no native language and asks it to express itself through unfamiliar tools. Classical astrology treats detriment as an essential weakness parallel to fall, though with a different symbolic flavor.
In context
Mars is in detriment in Libra, Venus in Aries and Scorpio, Mercury in Sagittarius and Pisces. A Mars in Libra has to find its gesture inside a sign that prefers harmony and mediation. That does not silence the planet; it forces the planet to invent a version of its drive that fits the host sign's style. Often this produces people who act through firm diplomacy or a very well-chosen forcefulness deployed at the right moment.
To go deeper
Detriment sits inside the classical system of dignities:
- Domicile: the opposite sign, the planet's own home.
- Fall: the other negative dignity, opposite exaltation.
- Exile: alternative name for detriment.
